1 假如nor表示否定意义，一般承接前句的否定，即前一句话为否定句。但你忽视了你这个句子表面上为否定句，但因为介词without的否定意义，实质句子为双重否定句，双重否定句表示的是强烈的一定。Nor is the city without its moments of beauty. = The city has its moments of beauty, too.
2 你对被动语态的理解有误。你不可以用汉语思维去判断一个句子应该用主动语态还是被动语态。比如一个人坐下来坐到地上这个动作，你若是根据汉语思维，感觉这可能是主动语态，你会说 He sat down on the ground. 这没问题，由于sat是不及物动词。但假如你用seat这个动作作谓语，seat是及物动词，意思是使宾语坐在某处。你可以用主动语态，但需要用反身代词作宾语，如 He seated himself on the ground. 你还可以用被动语态表示这个动作：He was seated on the ground. 此时你或许会纳闷，为何要用被动语态呢？明明是他一个人坐下去的啊。那是由于seat这个动作的意思是使坐下，坐下去的那个人对seat这个动词而言就是被动的。所以，一个动词是不是用被动语态，不可以依据汉语思维去判断，而应该依据英语动词的语义。tuck这个动词一般用作及物动词，tuck sth/sb away，表示把某人/某物放置到一个特定的地方藏起来，那样藏在某处的人或物对这个动作而言就是被动的。所以，只须你用tuck away作谓语动词表示大家躲在自家，你就只可以用被动语态，这是tuck away这个短语动词的语义决定的，而不是由汉语思维决定的。
